Best Gozo Day Trips from Malta

Gozo sits five kilometres off Malta’s northern tip and takes about twenty-five minutes to reach by ferry. That short crossing is the entire reason a day trip works — and the reason it goes wrong for people who underestimate what happens after they land.

The island is fourteen kilometres across. Its highlights sit at opposite corners of it: the Ġgantija Temples in the east, Dwejra on the west coast, Ramla Bay in the north, Xlendi in the south, the Citadel in the middle. Gozo’s bus network radiates from Victoria and thins out sharply at the edges, which is where all the good stuff is. Getting yourself between four of those places on public transport is a full day’s work on its own, and the one thing a day trip does not have is spare time.

The six ways to spend a day on Gozo

A guided coach tour is the comfortable answer. Along with the guide-and-train version it is one of only two options here where the Ġgantija admission is already paid, which matters — a temple complex built between roughly 3600 and 3200 BC, older than Stonehenge, and close to meaningless without someone explaining it. A coach cannot use the tracks, so you see the sights rather than the corners.

A jeep tour is the format most visitors end up booking, and it is our top pick. A UTV is the same idea with the roof gone. You are still driven — nobody in your group needs a licence — but you ride open-sided in a five-seat all-terrain vehicle. Compare the UTV tours if you want the adventure feel without taking the wheel.

A quad is the one you drive yourself, and the only one with a hard requirement: over 21, full current licence, ID at the meeting point. It is also the most fun on Gozo specifically, because the island’s best roads are narrow and the distances are short. The ferry on your own is the cheapest and the most flexible, and on a short Malta stay it is usually the wrong call. What actually changes your day

Three variables do most of the work.

Whether pickup is included. A tour that collects you in Sliema and one that meets you at Mġarr Harbour are not competing products. If you are staying in Malta and have not hired a car, pickup is the difference between a tour and a logistics exercise. Whether you get land transport on Gozo. Several cruise tickets put you ashore at Mġarr Harbour with two hours and no wheels. Mġarr is a pretty harbour. It is not Gozo. Check for a bus or a vehicle on the Gozo side before you compare on price.

When you are going. Between roughly May and September the swim stops and boat returns run, the Blue Lagoon is the main event, and quads make obvious sense. The honest version

One day is enough for Gozo’s highlights and not enough for Gozo. You will see the Citadel, a temple complex older than the pyramids, a couple of bays and enough of the countryside to understand why people keep saying the island feels different from Malta. You will not have time to sit in a village square for two hours, which is what Gozo is actually for.

If your Malta trip is four days or shorter, take the organised trip — it converts a day of timetables into a day of the island. If you have a week, do both: a tour first to see what is where, then a ferry day of your own to go back to whatever you did not want to leave.
