The Perfect One-Day Gozo Itinerary

Gozo is 14 kilometres long and 7 wide, with 43 kilometres of coast. Every guide mentions how small it is. Almost none of them mention that its seven best stops sit at the four corners of that rectangle, and that the road between two of them usually goes through Victoria in the middle.

That is what this itinerary is for. It runs anticlockwise from Mġarr so you never drive the same road twice, and it puts the west coast in the afternoon when the light is on the cliffs.

The route

Mġarr Harbour → Ġgantija → Tal-Mixta and Ramla Bay → Victoria and the Citadel → Ta’ Pinu → the Xwejni salt pans → Dwejra → Xlendi → Mġarr

08:00 — Mġarr Harbour

The ferry docks below Fort Chambray, with the church of Our Lady of Lourdes on the ridge above the quay and the fishing boats in front of it. Ten minutes and a photograph, then inland — the day is not here.

08:45 — Ġgantija Temples, Xagħra (1 hour)

Two megalithic temples built between roughly 3600 and 3200 BC, on the UNESCO World Heritage List, older than both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. The name comes from the Maltese word for giant, because the island decided nothing else could have moved the blocks.

Go early, before the cruise groups. Entry is included on the guided coach tours and is an optional extra on most others — carry cash if you are on a jeep or UTV day.

10:00 — Tal-Mixta Cave and Ramla Bay (45 minutes)

A shallow opening in the hillside above Ramla, and the frame that produced most of the photographs that sent you looking up Gozo. Red sand, turquoise water, terraced fields. It is up a rough track, which is the single strongest argument for doing this island in a jeep, UTV or quad rather than a coach.

The beach itself is below, if you are swimming.

11:15 — Victoria and the Citadel (1 hour 30)

The fortified old town on the hill in the middle of the island, and the stop everyone underestimates. From the ramparts you get the whole of Gozo in one turn. Inside are the Cathedral of the Assumption, the excavated lanes, the old prison and a vaulted stair cut down through the bastion.

Republic Street below the walls is where you eat. Budget properly for this one; ninety minutes is the floor, not the target.

13:15 — Lunch

On most organised tours this is a fixed stop with wine included. Independently, Victoria or Marsalforn.

14:30 — Ta’ Pinu Basilica (20 minutes)

The national shrine, standing alone in the fields near Għarb, with the votive offerings inside that make it worth going in rather than photographing from the road. Cover your arms; some operators state the dress code explicitly.

15:00 — Xwejni salt pans (20 minutes)

A chequerboard of shallow pans cut into the flat coastal rock, worked by the same families for generations. Fifteen minutes, and it photographs unreasonably well.

15:45 — Dwejra (45 minutes)

The west coast and the island’s best rock. The Inland Sea is a lagoon joined to the open Mediterranean by a tunnel through the cliff, and small boats run through it when the sea allows — around €6, paid on the day.

Say this once clearly: the Azure Window is gone. It collapsed into the sea in a storm in March 2017. Dwejra is still worth the stop. The arch is not on offer.

16:45 — Xlendi (45 minutes)

A village at the end of a narrow inlet in the south, with swimming off the rocks and a promenade of restaurants. The right place to be at the end of the day.

18:00 — back to Mġarr

Remember that the ferry fare is collected at Mġarr, on the way out of Gozo, not at Ċirkewwa on the way in. Leave a few minutes for it.

Can you do this independently?

Yes, with a car. The whole loop is about 50 kilometres and the driving is easy.

By bus, no — not in a day. Gozo’s network radiates from Victoria, so a journey between two coastal points usually means going inland and back out, and the frequencies at the edges are not built for tourists working a circuit. You will manage three of these stops, generously.

That is the whole argument for an organised day, and it is why the jeep and UTV tours exist in the shape they do: they run exactly this loop, they carry you between the stops, and they include both crossings. Tour versus DIY ferry runs the numbers for both.

If you are running late

Drop the salt pans and Ta’ Pinu. Keep the Citadel, Ġgantija and Dwejra — they are the three that will not come round again, and between them they cover the island’s history, its geology and its view of itself.
