Gozo in November: Is a Day Trip Worth It?

Yes — and for the things most people actually cross for, November is a better month than August.

Gozo averages a daytime high of about 20°C in November, falling to around 14°C overnight, with roughly six hours of sunshine a day. The sea is still about 21°C, which is warmer than the English Channel manages in August. There are around ten days with some rain and about 62mm falls across the month — real, but usually in short bursts rather than all-day grey.

What that adds up to is an island you can walk around all day without looking for shade, and a Citadel you can photograph without three cruise groups in the frame.

What gets better

The landscape. Malta’s dry season ends in autumn, and Gozo’s terraced fields turn green through November. The island spends the summer looking like limestone and the winter looking like farmland — the countryside shots people love are winter shots.

The crowds. Ġgantija, the Citadel and Dwejra are all busy in July and quiet in November. Tal-Mixta Cave is a genuinely different experience without a queue for the viewpoint.

Walking. Gozo’s coast path, the villages, the climb up to the Citadel — all far more pleasant at 20°C than at 33°C.

Price and availability. Fewer people competing for the same tours, and you can usually book closer to the date.

What gets worse

Swimming, mostly. The sea at 21°C is swimmable and the Blue Lagoon is still beautiful, but it stops being the reason to go. Most operators run their Comino swim stops from roughly May to September only, so a November jeep tour will not include one.

The boat legs. Several jeep and UTV tours substitute a boat return past the Blue Lagoon when the weather allows. In November it often does not, and you take the car ferry instead. Nothing is lost except a nice extra — but book expecting the ferry.

The Gozo and Comino cruises. These are built around the Blue Lagoon, and a lagoon you are not swimming in is a long boat ride. They still run, and they are still good value, but this is the season to take a land tour instead.

Daylight. Sunset moves early. An 08:00 crossing matters more in November than in July.

What to book in November

The full-day jeep tour runs year-round with hotel pickup, both crossings and lunch with local wine. An open jeep in November is genuinely pleasant — take a jacket. Full details.

The hop-on hop-off bus states explicitly that it operates all year round, which makes it the reliable self-guided option. Open-top in a shower is less charming, but the fourteen-stop loop still works. Full details.

The Christmas tour by tuk tuk or jeep with dinner appears in December and is exactly the kind of thing Gozo does well out of season — worth watching for if your dates run late.

A quad tour is the one to think twice about. Five hours on an open quad in Mediterranean rain, on exposed coast roads, is a long afternoon. If your dates are firm and the forecast is not, the jeep or UTV covers the same island under cover.

And December to February?

Much the same, more so. The land tours keep running, the island keeps getting greener, and the sea stops being part of the plan entirely. The Citadel, Ġgantija, Ta’ Pinu and Dwejra are unaffected by the season — they are the reason a winter Gozo day still works.

Watch the wind rather than the temperature. The Gozo Channel ferry runs around the clock all year, but strong gales can disrupt sailings, and Gozo’s north and west coasts catch the weather hard.
