Gozo Tour vs DIY Ferry: Which Is Better?

Much cheaper on paper — €4.65 for a foot-passenger return against $97 for a full-day tour. What the ticket price leaves out is roughly an hour each way to reach Ċirkewwa, and Gozo's Victoria-centred bus network at the other end. By bus you will realistically see three stops; an organised day covers six or seven.

Ċirkewwa sits at Malta's northern tip. Buses 41 and 42 run there from Valletta and X300 is the faster link; route 221 comes up from Buġibba and St Paul's Bay. Allow an hour from Valletta, more in summer traffic. This journey, not the crossing, is what makes an unguided Gozo day longer than people expect.

Partly. The network radiates from Victoria, so a journey between two coastal points usually means going inland and back out, and frequencies at the edges are thin. It works for one or two destinations in a day. It does not work for a circuit of Ġgantija, the Citadel, Dwejra and Ramla Bay.

If you have a week in Malta, yes — a car and an empty afternoon on a 67-square-kilometre island beats any organised itinerary. Check first whether your Malta rental agreement permits taking the vehicle across, because some do not, and a Gozo-based rental is sometimes cheaper anyway.

Cross on the ferry as a foot passenger and buy transport on the Gozo side. The hop-on hop-off bus starts at the ferry terminal, runs a fourteen-stop loop in about two and a half hours for $25, and operates all year. Total cost around €30, and you see far more than the buses alone allow.

On a Malta stay of four days or fewer, generally yes. You are not paying for a ferry ticket — you are paying to recover the four hours an unguided day loses at each end, and to convert them into the Citadel, Dwejra and Tal-Mixta. On a longer trip, or with a hire car, the argument weakens considerably.

The guided coach and most jeep and UTV tours use the Gozo Channel crossing and include the round-trip tickets. Several substitute a private boat or speedboat when the weather allows, returning past Comino and the Blue Lagoon instead — a better 25 minutes than the car ferry. The Gozo and Comino cruises do not use the public ferry at all.
