Best Gozo Quad Tours: ATV, Buggy & 4x4 Tours Compared
Gozo quad, ATV, buggy, UTV and 4x4 jeep tours side by side: who drives, licence and age rules, the €450–€500 damage excess, prices for two, routes, sunset versions and which format suits couples, families and nervous drivers.
A quad, buggy or 4x4 tour takes you onto the parts of Gozo the bus never reaches. The routes use limestone tracks, cliff roads, the salt-pan coast and narrow country lanes, and a typical full-day route links Dwejra, the Inland Sea, Xlendi, the Xwejni salt pans, Wied il-Għasri and the western cliffs, usually with transport from Malta in the price.
The vehicle matters more than the itinerary. Book a quad (ATV) if driving is part of the fun. Book a buggy if you want to drive but prefer a seat, a steering wheel and a more planted feel. Book a chauffeured jeep, 4x4 or UTV if you want the scenery without the driving, and a sunset version from mid-April to mid-October if you would rather skip the early start and swim off Comino first.
For adventurous couples, a guided self-drive quad tour is our pick; for families or anyone uneasy about handling a quad, a buggy or a driver-led 4x4 fits better. Drivers on the self-drive formats need to be 21 or older with an original full driving licence, and the damage excess on Gozo’s quad tours runs €450–€500 depending on the operator, so check both before you pay.

The short answer
Which Gozo adventure tour should you book?
| Tour type | Best for | Do you drive? | Typical capacity | Driving licence? | Our take | Our pick to book |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Buggy | Couples who want more stability | Yes | Usually 2 | Yes, for the driver | Best quad alternative | Gozo Buggy Tour on Viator (from €97.50, 4.5/5, 173 reviews) |
| Jeep / 4x4 safari | Families, mixed-age groups | No | Around 5 passengers | No | Best stress-free option | Gozo Jeep Tour with Lunch and Transfers ($97, 4.6/5, 1,258 reviews) |
| UTV tour | Families and groups wanting open-air touring | Chauffeur-driven on the group tours | Up to 6 | No, for passengers | Best group compromise | Gozo 4x4 UTV Jeep Tour with Comino Mini Cruise ($97, 4.4/5, 26 reviews) |
| Sunset quad / buggy | Summer visitors | Yes | 1–2 | Yes, for the driver | Best for atmosphere | Gozo Sunset Quad Bike Tour ($100, 4.2/5, 32 reviews) |
The GetYourGuide prices are the listing’s from-price in US dollars; the Viator links show the operator’s euro rate. Operators selling self-drive quad and buggy tours ask drivers to be at least 21 and to present an original full driving licence. Passenger ages, insurance excesses and licence details vary by tour, so check the one you book. The self-drive Gozo quad rental with island-wide pickup ($57, 4.9/5 from 18 reviews) goes further: a Category B licence held for at least two years, plus photo ID at the handover. It is a newer listing with few reviews so far.
If you are weighing a quad against a jeep or a tuk-tuk rather than against other off-road formats, our jeep vs quad vs tuk-tuk decision guide compares Gozo’s three chauffeured and self-drive styles in more detail.
Why Gozo is particularly good for a quad tour
Gozo is small enough to cross in a day and varied enough that the ride never feels repetitive. You leave the harbour at Mġarr, climb through farming villages and terraced fields, and then come out above a limestone cliff or a deep-blue bay. The secondary roads are quieter than most of Malta’s, and a network of rural lanes and rougher tracks lets quad and buggy tours reach landscapes that a coach excursion struggles to see.
Visit Gozo, the island’s tourism site, promotes quad tours as a way to explore the countryside, coastal trails, alleys and pathways, with guided tours run by registered operators.
That makes the journey part of the attraction. On a conventional Gozo sightseeing tour, the interesting part starts when the minibus stops. On a quad tour, much of what you remember happens between the stops.
Best Gozo quad tour: guided full-day ATV adventure
Best for: first-time visitors who want sightseeing and adventure
For most travellers searching for a Gozo quad tour, this is the format to start with. You drive your own automatic ATV and follow a guide in convoy around the island. One passenger can ride behind the driver, which suits couples.
The two main full-day operators quote different on-island times. Yippee Malta’s Gozo Quad Bike Day Tour (from €97.50 per person sharing, 4.7/5 from 752 reviews on Viator) spends about seven hours on Gozo, not counting transfers. Gozo Pride’s full-day quad tour runs from 10:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the island, about six hours, with Malta pickups from 8 a.m. and guests back by 5:30–6 p.m. Once hotel pickup, the crossings and the return are added, plan on a 9–10-hour day.
Typical highlights
Routes change with traffic, weather and season. Common stops include:
- Dwejra Bay
- Inland Sea
- Fungus Rock
- Xlendi
- Ta’ Pinu
- Wied il-Għasri
- Xwejni Salt Pans
- Marsalforn
- Qala viewpoints
- Ramla Valley or the Ramla viewpoints
- Ta’ Ċenċ or Sanap Cliffs
- Xewkija Rotunda
Some routes pass certain landmarks without stopping, so do not assume every tour visits every place above. The current Yippee and Gozo Pride itineraries lean heavily on the western coast, the valleys, the cliffs and the salt pans, more than on the island’s big conventional sights.
Why we like this format
A guided convoy removes the hardest part of renting an ATV yourself: route planning. You do not have to work out which farm road is usable, where to park at Dwejra or whether one more stop fits before the ferry home. You drive, and the guide handles the rest. That makes a guided quad tour a good fit if you have only one day for Gozo.
Quad tour vs renting a quad yourself
Two different products sit behind the phrase “Gozo quad bike”:
- a guided quad tour
- an independent quad rental
Visit Gozo lists both organised tours and independent ATV hire on the island.
Choose a guided tour if:
- this is your first visit to Gozo
- you only have one day
- you are coming from Malta
- you don’t want to navigate
- you want transfers arranged
- you prefer riding with other people
- you want a guide to decide the route
- you are nervous about finding suitable roads and trails
Rent independently if:
- you’ve already visited Gozo
- you’re staying overnight
- you want complete freedom over stops
- photography matters more than covering lots of ground
- you know exactly where you want to go
- you’re comfortable navigating unfamiliar roads
For a first-time day-tripper, we would take the guided tour. Independent hire makes more sense once you have a full day on Gozo without transfers from Malta to fit around. The self-drive quad rental with island-wide pickup collects you anywhere on Gozo; the Gozo quad tours page lists it beside the guided options.
Best Gozo buggy tour
Best for: couples who want adventure but aren’t sold on a quad
A buggy sits between a quad bike and an ordinary car. Instead of sitting astride an ATV, you sit inside a small off-road vehicle with seats and a steering wheel, and that alone makes it feel more familiar. Yippee Malta’s own FAQ recommends the buggy to travellers who like the idea of an off-road day but feel unsure about handling a quad, describing it as similar fun with a more buckled-in feel.
Why choose a buggy over a quad?
A buggy makes particular sense if:
- you’ve never ridden an ATV
- you prefer a steering wheel
- you’re travelling as a couple
- you want to sit beside your partner, not behind them
- you don’t like the exposed riding position of a quad
- you still want the off-road element
The self-drive buggies on the main full-day tours are automatic and take one driver and one passenger. Drivers need to be 21 or older with a full driving licence. Yippee Malta’s Gozo Buggy Tour with Blue Lagoon (from €97.50 per person sharing, 4.5/5 from 173 reviews on Viator) is the established full-day version. On GetYourGuide, the Sunset Buggy Tour & Comino ($117, 3.9/5 from 16 reviews) has a short and mixed review record, and the buggy rental with pickup and drop-off ($80, 5/5 from 5 reviews) is too new to judge.
Quad or buggy: which is more fun?
If both of you are comfortable with the machines, the quad feels more like riding and the buggy feels more like driving. The quad is more physical; the buggy is more relaxed. That difference matters more than the itinerary, because many full-day versions cover much the same parts of Gozo.
Best Gozo Jeep or 4x4 tour
Best for: families and travellers who don’t want to drive
A jeep safari gives you much of the outdoor, back-road character of a quad day without making you responsible for the vehicle. It suits:
- families
- older travellers
- groups with non-drivers in them
- visitors uncomfortable driving abroad
- people without a suitable driving licence
- anyone who wants to concentrate on the scenery
On Yippee Malta’s jeep safari, each vehicle carries five forward-facing passengers and a multilingual driver does the driving. The itinerary mixes Sanap Cliffs, Xlendi, Victoria, Dwejra, Ta’ Pinu and the Xwejni salt pans. On GetYourGuide, the Gozo Jeep Tour with Lunch and Transfers ($97, 4.6/5 from 1,258 reviews) is the most-reviewed jeep day; the listing runs about eight hours. If you want the boat home via the Blue Lagoon, the 4x4 Jeep Tour with Comino, lunch and transfers ($97, 4.6/5 from 453 reviews) adds it. The Gozo jeep tours page compares every jeep listing, including the private jeep with driver.
What you give up
You are no longer controlling the vehicle. For some travellers that is no loss at all; for others it removes the reason they wanted an adventure tour. If your reaction to the quad bikes is “I want to drive one of those”, book the quad. If it is “that looks fun, but I’d rather someone else drove”, book the jeep.
What about a UTV tour?
UTV naming is messy. Depending on the operator, “UTV”, “buggy”, “jeep” and “4x4” can describe quite different vehicles, so don’t choose on the label alone. Check three things before booking:
- Do you drive it yourself?
- How many passengers share the vehicle?
- Does everyone face forward?
Gozo Pride, for example, runs a six-seat UTV day with a licensed guide at the wheel (€80 per adult and €65 per child aged 4–12 on its own site), which is a chauffeured sightseeing format, not the two-person self-drive you get in a buggy. The closest GetYourGuide equivalent is the 4x4 UTV jeep tour with Comino mini cruise ($97, 4.4/5 from 26 reviews). If you search for “Gozo UTV tour”, read the vehicle description carefully; the Gozo UTV tours page sorts the listings by who drives.
Our Gozo quad vs buggy vs Jeep verdict
Pick the quad if…
You want the most memorable ride. It is our first choice for:
- adventurous couples
- confident drivers
- travellers aged 21 and over
- first-time Gozo visitors who want something livelier than a bus tour
Verdict: ★★★★★
Pick the buggy if…
You want to drive, but a quad looks a little too exposed or unfamiliar. It works well for couples who want to sit next to each other.
Verdict: ★★★★★
Pick the Jeep/4x4 if…
The places matter more than the driving. You still see Gozo’s cliffs and back country without operating anything.
Verdict: ★★★★½
Pick a conventional minibus tour if…
Your priorities are:
- churches
- history
- longer guided explanations
- maximum comfort
- minimum dust
Adventure tours are strong on landscape, but they are not automatically the best way to see Gozo’s archaeological and cultural sites. For those, the Gozo day trip including Ġgantija Temples and lunch ($91, 4.3/5 from 2,993 reviews) covers the temples, the Citadel and Dwejra by coach.
What do Gozo quad tours actually visit?
The strongest routes concentrate on places where the landscape is the attraction.
Dwejra
Dwejra suits these tours almost perfectly. Within a small area you have:
- the Inland Sea
- Fungus Rock
- Dwejra Bay
- limestone cliffs
- the site where the Azure Window once stood
Most of the main quad itineraries include Dwejra in some form; our Blue Hole guide covers the site itself. If your tour leaves enough free time, the Inland Sea boat ride is a good add-on, though it is usually paid locally and not part of the base price.
Xwejni Salt Pans
The honey-coloured salt pans outside Marsalforn are another natural quad stop. They stretch along a rugged section of the north coast and photograph well when the shallow pans reflect the sky. Tours usually stop briefly, which is enough for a first visit.
Wied il-Għasri
This narrow gorge cutting inland from the coast is one of the places where a small adventure group makes more sense than a coach. Some quad and buggy itineraries approach the Għasri area as part of the north-coast route.
Xlendi
Xlendi changes the mood after Gozo’s dry countryside: a narrow bay with steep slopes, restaurants and clear water. Some tours stop here; others pass through, depending on itinerary and season. Our Xlendi Bay guide covers swimming and food if you come back on your own.
Ta’ Pinu
Gozo’s monumental basilica usually appears as a short stop or a drive-past. If seeing the interior matters to you, check the actual itinerary; a mention of Ta’ Pinu does not mean time inside.
Ta’ Ċenċ and Sanap Cliffs
These high limestone cliffs are exactly what separates an adventure route from a conventional sightseeing one. Seasonal routes change, though: Gozo Pride lists Sanap Cliffs as a highlight only on its winter itinerary.
What you probably won’t see properly on a quad tour
Quad tours are not ordinary Gozo sightseeing tours done on ATVs. Their strength is landscape and movement. If your main priorities are:
- Ġgantija Temples
- long walks through Victoria
- the museums inside the Citadel
- detailed church visits
- leisurely lunches
- several hours at Ramla Bay
a quad tour may feel rushed. A jeep tour can fit in more classic sightseeing: Yippee Malta’s jeep itinerary includes both the Citadel and an optional Ġgantija stop (entry not included). Decide whether you want to experience Gozo’s landscape or study its monuments. For the first, the quad wins; for the second, read our Ġgantija Temples guide and Victoria guide and pick a coach or jeep day.
How difficult is it to drive a Gozo quad?
You don’t normally need previous ATV experience. The tours use automatic quad bikes and start with a safety and handling briefing before the convoy leaves. That does not mean you can treat the machines casually. During the day you may meet:
- narrow roads
- loose gravel
- uneven tracks
- steep sections
- traffic
- dust
- wet roads after rain
The tour leader sets the pace and the group travels in convoy. Gozo Pride’s terms prohibit racing and overtaking outright. If you are a nervous driver at home, a quad will not feel easier because you are on holiday; the buggy or the jeep is the better choice.
Do you need a driving licence?
For a self-drive quad: yes
The main tour operators require:
- a minimum driver age of 21
- a full, valid driving licence
- the original physical licence
- no provisional licence
Gozo Pride also asks for a second form of government-issued photo ID. Do not count on a phone photo of your licence: Yippee Malta states that temporary licences, copies and photos are not accepted. For the independent self-drive rental, the bar is higher, with a Category B car licence held for at least two years.
For passengers
Passengers do not need a driving licence. If two adults want to swap driving during the day, both have to meet the operator’s driver rules.
How old do children need to be?
There is no island-wide answer, because operator rules vary. Current examples:
- 5+ for quad passengers on the Yippee and Gozo Pride tours
- 3+ or 5+ for buggy passengers, depending on the operator
- younger children are accepted on chauffeur-driven vehicles; Gozo Pride’s UTV takes children 3 and under free
Yippee Malta’s quad and buggy tours set the passenger minimum at five. If you are travelling with children, choose the tour by the age policy shown at checkout, not by a general guide like this one.
What does a Gozo quad tour cost?
On the operators’ own websites in October 2026, a full-day self-drive quad or buggy costs:
- €115 for one driver on their own vehicle (Yippee Malta and Gozo Pride)
- €195 for a vehicle shared by a driver and a passenger, which works out at €97.50 each
Chauffeured jeep days cost less per person because you share the vehicle: Yippee Malta charges €85 per adult and €60 per child aged 3–12 for its jeep safari, and Gozo Pride €80 per adult for its UTV day. GetYourGuide lists in US dollars and its from-prices differ from the operators’ euro rates: the jeep tours start at $97, the sunset quad at $100 and the self-drive quad rental at $57. Prices change, so treat these as comparison figures and check the rate on your date.
What it costs for two adults
| Format | Price basis | Total for two adults |
|---|---|---|
| Quad, sharing one vehicle | €195 per quad (operator direct) | €195 |
| Quad, one each | €115 per quad (operator direct) | €230 |
| Buggy, sharing | €195 per buggy (operator direct) | €195 |
| Jeep safari | €85 per adult (Yippee direct) | €170 |
| UTV, chauffeured | €80 per adult (Gozo Pride direct) | €160 |
A shared quad looks expensive per vehicle until you divide it by two; the gap to a jeep for a couple is about €25.
What should be included?
A good full-day tour from Malta includes most of the logistics. Look for:
- Malta hotel or meeting-point pickup
- transport to northern Malta
- the crossing to Gozo
- quad or buggy, and fuel
- helmet
- tour leader
- insurance
- lunch or a picnic
- the return crossing
- the return transfer in Malta
Some packages also come back past Comino, the Blue Lagoon or the Crystal Lagoon, weather permitting. Bundled like this, the tour often costs less than arranging each piece yourself; our Malta to Gozo ferry guide prices the crossing if you go independently.
Gozo quad tour + Comino: is it really two tours in one?
Partly. Many Gozo adventure tours come back to Malta on a small private boat that runs along the Comino coast. Depending on season and weather, the return can include:
- the Comino caves
- the Blue Lagoon
- the Crystal Lagoon
- a swimming stop
The operators state that these sections depend on the weather, and they switch to the regular ferry when the sea is too rough for the private boat. Don’t book mainly for hours at the Blue Lagoon; treat Comino as a bonus on a Gozo tour. If the Blue Lagoon is your main goal, a dedicated boat trip such as the Gozo & Comino Blue Lagoon and sea caves cruise ($28, 4.4/5 from 21,618 reviews) gives you far more time in the water; our Gozo and Comino day trip page compares the options.
Is there a swimming stop?
Often, from late spring to early autumn. Possible spots include:
- Gozo
- the Blue Lagoon
- the Crystal Lagoon
- another sheltered bay chosen on the day
Never treat swimming as guaranteed, because sea conditions can change the plan. In the cooler months, operators use the time for more sightseeing.
Morning tour or sunset quad tour?
From mid-April to mid-October you have a real choice.
Regular daytime quad
Choose it if you:
- want the classic itinerary
- prefer riding in full daylight
- are visiting outside the summer season
- want an earlier finish
Sunset quad
Choose it if you:
- are visiting between mid-April and mid-October
- don’t want an early-morning start
- dislike the midday heat
- want golden-hour scenery
- like the idea of swimming off Comino first
Yippee Malta runs dedicated sunset quad and buggy tours from mid-April to mid-October: an afternoon at Comino, then a late-day ride on Gozo, returning after sunset. On GetYourGuide, the Gozo Sunset Quad Bike Tour ($100, 4.2/5 from 32 reviews) is about five hours long; its rating sits below the full-day tours, so read the recent reviews before booking.
Our pick
- May, June and September: sunset.
- November to March: daytime.
- July and August: sunset, if you dislike riding in strong midday heat.
Is a sunset tour better than a daytime tour?
Not automatically. A sunset version gives up some daytime sightseeing for warm light, cooler riding, a later start and the sunset itself. A daytime tour gives you maximum daylight and the conventional sightseeing timetable. Photographers and couples often prefer the sunset format; travellers who want to tick off as many sights as possible usually won’t.
Can you do a Gozo quad tour from Valletta?
Yes. Most full-day tours sold in Malta collect you from your hotel or a designated point, so you never have to reach Gozo on your own. Pickups start in the morning, between about 8:00 and 9:15 depending on where you stay, and then head north to the crossing. You can usually book from:
- Valletta
- Sliema
- St Julian’s
- Bugibba
- Mellieħa
- other main Malta accommodation areas
Check the pickup list carefully: “hotel pickup” can mean the nearest designated meeting point, not your hotel door. Our Gozo from Valletta page covers the pickup and ferry timings from the capital.
What if you’re already staying in Gozo?
You don’t need to buy a Malta transfer to join an adventure tour. Some operators collect within Gozo or let you start at Mġarr Harbour. Check the end of the day, though: on Yippee Malta’s Comino combinations, Gozo-based guests arrange their own way back from Comino. If you are sleeping on Gozo, an independent half-day quad rental also becomes more attractive, because you don’t have to plan around the ferry.
How long does the whole day take?
Listings can make this confusing. A tour may say six or seven hours while the door-to-door day from Malta is much longer, because the quoted time often covers only the part on Gozo and leaves out:
- the morning hotel pickup
- the road transfer across Malta
- the boat crossing
- waiting
- the evening transfer back
Manawa’s listing for a guided Gozo quad day asks you to allow about 10 hours in total, with the quad section lasting around six. Gozo Pride’s six-hour quad tour has you back at your Malta hotel by 5:30–6 p.m. after an 8 a.m. pickup. If you have a dinner booking that evening, check the expected return time, not the activity length.
What should you wear?
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dusty. Our packing list:
- closed-toe shoes
- sunglasses
- sunscreen
- light, breathable clothes
- a small backpack
- water
- swimsuit from late spring to early autumn
- a towel if swimming is planned
- a light waterproof outside the summer months
- your driving licence
- a second ID if requested
- cash for optional extras
Closed shoes are an operator safety requirement on some tours, not a suggestion. Leave behind:
- flip-flops
- long loose scarves
- impractical dresses
- bulky shoulder bags
- pristine white clothes
A quad day is not especially dirty in normal conditions, but it is still an outdoor motorised activity.
Will you get dusty?
Probably. Gozo is very dry by late summer, and riding behind several vehicles on an unpaved track throws up dust. If that bothers you, a buggy is better than a quad, and a jeep is better than a buggy. Spring landscapes are greener; late summer turns the island drier and more ochre.
What happens if it rains?
Tours may still run in light or manageable rain. Operators provide or recommend rain protection and can change routes for the weather. The boat section is far more sensitive to the sea: when the private crossing is unsuitable, operators move passengers to the regular ferry. Heavy rain also changes how the rural tracks ride. If bad weather is forecast, read your provider’s cancellation policy; a refund is not automatic.
Is quad biking in Gozo safe?
Like any motorised activity, it carries more risk than sitting on a sightseeing bus. A reputable guided tour should provide:
- helmets
- a safety briefing
- properly maintained vehicles
- insurance
- a lead guide
- convoy rules
- a controlled pace
Yippee Malta adds a second guide at the back of larger convoys. The biggest variable is still the person driving. Don’t:
- race
- deliberately fall behind
- overtake the guide
- attempt stunts
- use your phone while riding
- drink alcohol before driving
A Gozo quad tour is guided sightseeing on an adventurous vehicle, not an off-road race.
Check the insurance excess before booking
“Insurance included” does not mean you carry no cost if you damage the quad. Both main operators apply an excess when the driver is at fault or the vehicle is damaged: €450 on Yippee Malta’s quad tours, plus a €25 per person booking deposit, and the first €500 of damage on Gozo Pride’s. Before booking, check:
- liability insurance
- collision and damage cover
- the excess amount
- whether a deposit is required
- exclusions for reckless driving
- what happens if you damage tyres or bodywork
This matters far more than whether lunch has two courses or three.
Can two people share one quad?
Usually, yes, and it is one of the cheaper ways for a couple to book. One person drives and the other sits behind. Yippee Malta lets the pair swap during the tour if both are 21 or older and carry valid licences.
Should a couple book one or two quads?
Book one if:
- only one of you wants to drive
- you want to save money
- your partner likes being a passenger
Book two if:
- you both want the full driving experience
- you’re both confident drivers
- budget isn’t the main concern
For most couples, sharing one is enough.
Is the passenger experience still worth it?
Yes, if you are happy sitting behind the driver for long stretches. The passenger still gets:
- the coastal scenery
- the stops
- the photographs
- swimming, where included
- the feel of riding an ATV
- the full itinerary
If you know you’ll spend the day wishing you were driving, book your own vehicle.
Quad or buggy for a nervous driver?
The buggy. You get:
- an ordinary seated position
- a steering wheel
- your passenger beside you
- controls that feel familiar
That does not make it risk-free, but many travellers find it less intimidating. If you are very nervous about driving, skip both and take the jeep; six hours worrying about the next hill does not improve a holiday.
Which is best for families?
With young children
A driver-led jeep or UTV.
With teenagers
Jeep or buggy, depending on the tour’s passenger-age rule.
With adult children
The quad tour.
Multi-generational family
Jeep or 4x4. With the chauffeured version, nobody has to be the responsible driver.
Which is best for couples?
Our ranking:
- Quad
- Buggy
- Sunset quad
- Jeep
If neither of you enjoys driving unfamiliar vehicles:
- Sunset jeep or UTV — the shared sunset UTV tour with Comino ($97, 4.2/5 from 39 reviews)
- Regular jeep
There is no prize for booking the most adventurous option if neither of you will enjoy it.
Which is best for solo travellers?
Quad tours work well for solo travellers because the convoy gives you an instant group. The drawback is price: at €115 you pay for the whole vehicle with no passenger to share it. If you mainly want sightseeing, a jeep, a tuk-tuk or a conventional guided Gozo tour costs less; the Sunset Tuk Tuk Tour & Blue Lagoon ($97, 4.5/5 from 46 reviews) is the chauffeured option with the most character.
Best time of year for a Gozo quad tour
March to May
Excellent. Gozo is greener, the temperatures suit outdoor sightseeing, and you avoid the summer heat.
June
One of our favourite months. You get long days and a warm sea without the peak-season crowds of July and August.
July and August
Good, but hot. Expect:
- strong sun
- dusty tracks
- busy attractions
- high demand
This is when a sunset quad or buggy makes most sense.
September and October
Excellent. The sea is still warm and the summer crowds start to thin.
November to February
Still possible. The full-day tours run all year. You’ll need:
- warmer layers
- wind protection
- a rain jacket
In return you get quieter sights and greener countryside; our Gozo in November page covers what runs in the off-season.
Do tours run all year?
Many do. The full-day quad, buggy and jeep tours from the main operators run daily all year, while the sunset editions are seasonal, from mid-April to mid-October. Bad weather can still cancel or change individual departures.
Quad tour or normal Gozo day tour?
Choose the quad if your priority is:
- landscape
- adventure
- countryside
- coastal scenery
- an unusual experience
Choose a normal guided tour if your priority is:
- history
- archaeology
- churches
- guide commentary
- comfort
For many first-time visitors who enjoy driving, we would take the quad. For travellers mainly interested in Gozo’s culture and history, we would take a conventional tour. Mobility, confidence and interest matter more than age. If you are still deciding between day-trip formats altogether, our guide to choosing a Gozo day trip covers coach, boat, jeep and private options.
Quad tour or self-drive rental car?
A rental car gives you more freedom; the quad gives you more fun.
Car wins for:
- air-conditioning
- a flexible timetable
- babies and young children
- luggage
- lingering at attractions
- bad weather
Quad wins for:
- fun
- scenic back roads
- adventure
- the social atmosphere
- not having to plan a route
If you only have one day, a guided quad can be easier than a rental car, because someone else has already planned the route.
Quad tour or Gozo hop-on hop-off bus?
They are almost opposite experiences.
Hop-on hop-off
Better for:
- budget travellers
- independent sightseeing
- people uncomfortable driving
The City Sightseeing Gozo hop-on hop-off bus ($25, 4.2/5 from 1,304 reviews) covers the main sights on a fixed loop.
Quad
Better for:
- adventure
- couples
- countryside
- hard-to-reach landscapes
- a day you’ll remember
You pay much more for the quad, but you are buying an activity as well as transport.
Things to check before booking
Don’t compare tours on price alone. Check:
1. Vehicle type
Quad, buggy, UTV and jeep are not interchangeable.
2. Self-drive or chauffeur-driven
Never assume.
3. Gozo touring time
A 10-hour excursion can include several hours of transfers.
4. Group size
Smaller convoys usually mean less waiting.
5. Lunch
Included or not?
6. Malta transfer
Does pickup cover your accommodation area?
7. Boat crossing
Private boat or public ferry?
8. Comino
A real swim stop, or a scenic pass?
9. Driving age
Usually 21+, but verify.
10. Passenger age
Especially with children.
11. Licence requirements
Bring the physical licence, and a second photo ID if asked.
12. Insurance excess
€450–€500 on the main quad tours.
13. Cancellation policy
Especially from November to March.
14. Sunset vs daytime
These are quite different days out.
The mistake we’d avoid
Don’t choose a tour because it lists the most attractions. A route promising fifteen places does not give you fifteen proper visits. Adventure tours work best when they balance riding, scenery and a handful of good stops; getting off the quad every ten minutes for a photo defeats the point. If you want deep sightseeing, choose a conventional tour. If you want a different way to experience Gozo, choose the itinerary with plenty of driving through good scenery.
Our ideal Gozo quad tour
If we were booking a first Gozo quad day from Malta, we would look for:
- a full-day format
- an automatic ATV
- no more than two people per quad
- a guided convoy
- about six hours on Gozo
- Dwejra
- the west-coast cliffs
- the Xwejni salt pans
- the Għasri area
- lunch included
- pickup from Malta
- a private boat crossing when conditions allow
- the Comino coast on the return
- clearly stated insurance terms
That combination gives you the adventure and enough classic Gozo scenery to feel you have seen the island.
Who should NOT book a quad tour?
Skip it if:
- you’re uncomfortable driving unfamiliar vehicles
- you don’t have the required licence
- you strongly dislike dust or wind
- mobility makes getting on and off a quad difficult
- you want a slow archaeological day
- you need air-conditioning
- you’re travelling with a baby
- you want a drink with lunch
- bad weather is forecast and you hate riding in rain
A jeep tour solves most of those problems and keeps the back-road character.
Gozo quad tour FAQ
Are Gozo quad tours worth it?
Yes, especially if you only have one day and enjoy driving. They combine transport, sightseeing and an activity in one excursion and reach countryside routes that coach tours miss.
What is the best Gozo quad tour?
For most first-time visitors, a full-day guided self-drive ATV tour that includes transfers from Malta, Dwejra and the northern and western countryside. A Comino boat section is a useful bonus but should not be the main reason to choose the tour.
Do I need experience driving a quad bike?
Usually not. The main operators give a safety and handling briefing before departure, and the quads on many tours are automatic. You should still be a reasonably confident road user.
Do I need a motorcycle licence?
No. The main tour operators ask for a full, valid car driving licence, not quad-riding experience; the independent rental asks for a Category B licence held for two years. Check the specific vehicle and operator before booking.
How old do you need to be to drive a quad in Gozo?
21 is the usual minimum on organised tours.
Can I ride as a passenger?
Yes. Most quad tours allow one passenger behind the driver, aged five or over on the main tours.
Can couples share one quad?
Yes, and it costs €195 for the pair against €230 for two separate quads at the operators’ direct rates.
Can we swap drivers?
Some operators allow it if both of you meet the driver-age and licence rules. Confirm before booking.
Are helmets provided?
Yes. Helmets (and hairnets) come with the main organised quad tours.
Do tours include lunch?
Many full-day tours do, as a light restaurant meal or a picnic. Check the listing, because inclusions vary.
Can I visit Gozo and the Blue Lagoon on the same tour?
Yes. Several tours combine Gozo with a return boat ride around Comino, sometimes with a Blue Lagoon or Crystal Lagoon swim stop from late spring to early autumn. The boat sections depend on the weather.
Is Gozo better by quad or Jeep?
Quad if you want adventure; jeep if you want comfort. Both reach scenic parts of Gozo, but on the quad the driving becomes a large part of the day.
Is a buggy easier than a quad?
Many first-time drivers find a buggy more familiar because of the seated position and the steering wheel. If a quad worries you but you still want to drive, take the buggy.
How much is a Gozo quad tour?
On the operators’ own sites in 2026, about €115 for a solo driver and €195 for a driver and passenger sharing. GetYourGuide’s sunset quad starts at $100 and the self-drive rental at $57.
Is the Blue Lagoon included?
Sometimes, but “included” can mean anything from a scenic pass to a swimming stop. Read the itinerary.
Can a Gozo quad tour be cancelled because of weather?
Yes, routes and sea crossings can change when conditions are unsuitable. Operators usually switch the private boat for the regular ferry instead of cancelling the whole day.
Final verdict
Treat a Gozo quad tour as an adventure first and a sightseeing tour second. You still see the island’s signature landscapes (Dwejra, the salt pans, the cliffs, the valleys and the coastal villages), but what you remember is the ride between them: limestone tracks, stone-walled lanes, sea views around the next corner and a whole day outdoors.
For most adventurous first-time visitors, we would book the full-day guided quad. Choose the buggy for almost the same day with a more familiar driving position, and the jeep or 4x4 if you want someone else to handle the road while you take photographs. From mid-April to mid-October, consider the sunset versions; Gozo’s exposed west looks its best once the midday glare has gone.
- Our overall pick: guided full-day quad/ATV tour
- Best for nervous drivers: buggy
- Best for families: chauffeured jeep or UTV
- Best summer option: sunset quad or buggy
- Best for history-first visitors: a conventional Gozo sightseeing tour instead
When you have picked a format, the Gozo quad tours, jeep tours and UTV tours pages list the bookable tours with live availability; check your exact date, because sunset departures and swim stops change with the season. For the rest of your day, see what to see in Gozo in one day and how to get to Gozo from Malta.
