Xlendi Bay, Gozo: Swimming, Restaurants, Walks & How to Visit

Xlendi Bay, Gozo: swimming and snorkelling spots, the cliff walk to Caroline Cave and Xlendi Tower, waterfront restaurants, sunset, bus routes from Victoria and how long to allow.

Updated October 2026

Xlendi Bay is one of the easiest places in Gozo to like immediately. A narrow turquoise inlet cuts between limestone cliffs, small boats float in the sheltered water, and cafés and restaurants sit almost directly on the waterfront. You can swim, snorkel, eat lunch by the sea, walk out toward a 17th-century watchtower, or stay until sunset.

For a first-time visitor doing a Gozo day trip from Malta, Xlendi works particularly well as a 60–90 minute coastal stop after Victoria. If you want to swim or have lunch, allow 2–3 hours. If you are staying overnight on Gozo, it gets even better in the late afternoon, when the day-trip traffic thins out and the western sky starts to colour.

Xlendi is not Gozo’s best sandy beach, because the beach itself is tiny. That hardly matters. Come for the sheltered swimming, the cliff setting, the waterfront atmosphere and the sunset rather than for a wide stretch of sand.

The short answer: what should you do in Xlendi?

If you have only one hour, we would:

  1. Walk along the waterfront.
  2. Continue around the rocky path beside the bay.
  3. Climb toward Caroline Cave for views back across Xlendi.
  4. Return for a coffee, gelato or drink beside the water.

If you have two hours, add either a swim or snorkel, or the walk toward Xlendi Tower.

If you have three hours, Xlendi becomes an excellent lunch-and-swim stop instead of just another sightseeing checkpoint.

Xlendi is also a regular stop on the organised trips. The full-day Gozo jeep tour with lunch and transfers visits the bay between the Citadel and Dwejra, is rated 4.6/5 from more than 1,200 reviews, and our breakdown covers the rest of its route.

Why Xlendi is worth visiting

Xlendi does not have one monumental attraction comparable to the Cittadella or Ġgantija. Its appeal comes from the combination of landscape and atmosphere.

The bay is a narrow, fjord-like inlet enclosed by steep limestone slopes. At its innermost end is a small seaside village, while farther toward the mouth the built-up waterfront gives way to rugged rock.

It is therefore one of the few places in Gozo where you can comfortably combine:

  • sightseeing
  • swimming
  • snorkelling
  • a cliff walk
  • lunch
  • sunset

without getting back into a car or bus. That versatility is why Xlendi is such an easy inclusion in a one-day Gozo itinerary.

1. Swim in Xlendi Bay

Swimming is one of Xlendi’s biggest draws.

The bay is narrow and relatively sheltered, with clear Mediterranean water surrounded by cliffs. Visit Gozo lists Xlendi among the island’s popular swimming destinations and notes that Gozo’s swimming season stretches through the warmer months, with summer sea temperatures reaching around 27°C.

What the beach is actually like

Do not picture a large sandy beach. The sandy, shingly patch at the head of the bay is small, particularly once summer visitors arrive.

Many people instead swim from:

  • the rocky shoreline
  • concrete bathing platforms
  • ladders descending into the water
  • the waterside path around the bay

That works quite well, because the water becomes deeper away from the tiny beach and there is much more room to spread out.

Best for

Xlendi is particularly good if you prefer:

  • swimming to lying on sand all day
  • easy access to restaurants and cafés
  • clear water
  • snorkelling from shore
  • having somewhere shaded nearby

If your main goal is a classic sandy beach, Ramla Bay is the stronger choice.

Is Xlendi Bay safe for swimming?

In calm conditions, the inner bay is generally appealing for ordinary recreational swimming. However, Xlendi opens onto the sea and conditions can change. Wind and swell matter, particularly farther toward the mouth of the bay.

A few sensible rules:

  • check local sea conditions before entering
  • don’t assume calm-looking water means the outer coastline is calm
  • keep clear of moving boats
  • supervise children closely
  • use ladders rather than jumping from unfamiliar rocks
  • avoid exposed rocky edges when waves are breaking over them

Gozo promotes its coast extensively for swimming and water sports, but conditions vary around the island, which is one reason having alternative bays nearby can be useful.

2. Go snorkelling

Xlendi is much better for snorkelling than its tiny beach might suggest. The interesting areas are generally along the rocky margins of the bay, where there is more underwater structure than directly off the beach.

Bring or rent a mask and look around:

  • rock walls
  • ledges
  • small cavities
  • areas away from the busiest swimming zone

Visibility in Gozo can be excellent in settled weather, and Visit Gozo highlights snorkelling and diving as major activities around Xlendi and elsewhere on the island.

Is Xlendi Gozo’s best snorkelling spot?

Not necessarily. If snorkelling is the main purpose of your trip, we would also consider:

  • Wied il-Għasri
  • Blue Hole/Dwejra
  • Xatt l-Aħmar
  • Ħondoq ir-Rummien

But Xlendi wins on convenience. You can snorkel, change, eat and catch a bus without needing to visit an isolated stretch of coast.

3. Walk the waterside path

One of the easiest and most enjoyable things to do in Xlendi costs nothing. Follow the promenade and waterside path away from the restaurants and around the edge of the bay.

Almost immediately, the setting becomes much more dramatic. You get:

  • turquoise water below
  • cliffs directly across the inlet
  • boats framed by the village
  • views toward the mouth of the bay

This short walk is worthwhile even if you have no intention of swimming. For photographers, the best images of Xlendi often come from looking back toward the village, instead of from the waterfront itself.

4. Find Caroline Cave

The path along the side of Xlendi Bay leads toward Caroline Cave, reached by steps along the cliffside. Visit Gozo identifies it as one of the small hidden attractions you can reach while walking around the bay.

The cave itself matters less than the little journey to reach it. The path gives you elevated views back over Xlendi’s buildings and boats and is one of the quickest ways to escape the busiest restaurant frontage.

Is it worth doing?

Yes, if you have more than about 45 minutes in Xlendi. It adds:

  • a little exploration
  • a better viewpoint
  • more interesting photographs
  • some contrast with the commercial waterfront

If mobility is limited, you can enjoy Xlendi perfectly well without climbing the steps.

5. Walk to Xlendi Tower

For a longer walk, head toward Xlendi Tower on the opposite side, out toward the mouth of the bay. The limestone watchtower dates from 1650, during the rule of Grand Master Juan de Lascaris-Castellar.

It was built primarily to watch the coast and discourage:

  • smugglers
  • corsairs
  • unauthorised landings
  • people attempting to evade quarantine

The tower remained part of the bay’s defensive system for centuries and was later used again as a coastal observation post during World War II. Visit Gozo describes it as the oldest free-standing coastal watchtower in Gozo.

Why walk there?

The tower itself is interesting, but the bigger reason is the setting. Once you leave the dense cluster of waterfront buildings, Xlendi changes character completely. You get:

  • open coastline
  • exposed limestone
  • views back into the bay
  • a much wilder feel
  • good sunset positions

This is a particularly worthwhile addition if you are staying in Xlendi rather than merely visiting for lunch.

How long is the Xlendi Tower walk?

Allow roughly 45–60 minutes return at an easy sightseeing pace, potentially longer if you stop repeatedly for photographs.

The terrain around the bay and tower is much less polished than the waterfront promenade, so good footwear is sensible. In midsummer, take water and don’t treat the exposed walk as an easy midday stroll.

6. Stay for sunset

Xlendi is one of Gozo’s stronger sunset locations. Its position on the island’s western and southwestern side means the coastline opens toward the evening light, and Visit Gozo lists Xlendi, Wardija and Dwejra among the popular places for watching the sunset.

The best sunset experience is not necessarily from the middle of the waterfront. Walk outward toward the cliffs or tower, where your view of the horizon becomes more open.

Best sunset strategy

If you are spending a full day on Gozo, Victoria → western Gozo/Dwejra → Xlendi for late afternoon → dinner works exceptionally well. You avoid rushing back and forth across the island and finish somewhere with plenty of places to eat.

7. Eat on the waterfront

Eating is part of the Xlendi experience, not a practical interruption to it. Restaurants line the bay, with tables overlooking:

  • boats
  • swimmers
  • cliffs
  • evening light on the water

Visit Gozo highlights waterfront dining as one of Xlendi’s characteristic attractions. You will find restaurants serving various combinations of:

  • seafood
  • Mediterranean dishes
  • Maltese/Gozitan food
  • pasta
  • pizza
  • salads
  • grilled meats

What should you order?

For a more local meal, look for these dishes and ingredients:

Fresh fish. Availability varies according to catch and season.

Octopus. Often served stewed, grilled or in pasta dishes.

Gozitan ftira. A local bread/pizza-style speciality, usually with robust Mediterranean toppings.

Ġbejniet. Small traditional Maltese cheeses, frequently appearing on platters and salads.

Maltese rabbit. A classic Maltese dish, although perhaps less obvious if you came specifically for a seaside seafood lunch.

Should you book?

For a normal weekday outside high season, you may have plenty of choice. For:

  • Saturday evenings
  • July and August
  • sunset tables
  • larger groups

booking ahead is sensible if you care about a specific restaurant or front-row table.

Is Xlendi expensive?

Xlendi is a resort village, so a table directly on the water can command somewhat more than an inland snack bar in Victoria or a small village. But you do not have to make it an expensive stop. You can equally:

  • buy a snack
  • have coffee
  • get gelato
  • grab something simple and sit near the bay

For a Gozo day trip, we think the waterfront setting makes Xlendi one of the better places to spend your lunch budget.

8. Diving in Xlendi

Gozo has an unusually strong diving scene, and Xlendi is one of the island’s established diving bases. The bay provides access to underwater features suited to different experience levels, and dive operators work in the area.

Malta regulates recreational diving businesses. Visitors taking instruction or guided diving should use licensed operators, and rules also apply to independent divers according to their certification level, as Visit Gozo’s diving-safety guidance explains.

If diving is a major part of your Gozo trip, Xlendi can therefore make sense as a place to stay and not just a sightseeing stop.

9. Kayaking and watersports

In summer, Xlendi also supports various water activities. Visit Gozo lists Xlendi Watersports and notes activities around Gozo including:

  • kayaking
  • paddleboarding
  • boat trips
  • personal watercraft/watersports
  • other recreational sea activities

Xlendi and Ħondoq ir-Rummien are both mentioned as summer locations for water-based activities. Availability can be seasonal, so if a particular activity matters to you, check directly before making the trip.

10. Take a boat trip

Small-scale boat trips from Xlendi can offer another perspective on the cliff-lined coastline. The exact products and schedules are seasonal and can change, so we would not plan a tightly timed one-day Gozo itinerary around a casual local boat departure without confirming it first.

If you’re staying overnight and see operators working in the bay, it can be an enjoyable spontaneous addition.

Xlendi Beach vs Ramla Bay

These two are often grouped simply as “Gozo beaches”, but they are very different.

Our pick

Choose Ramla if you primarily want sand. Choose Xlendi if you want a swim + lunch + scenery combination.

Xlendi vs Marsalforn

Gozo’s two best-known seaside resort villages have surprisingly different personalities.

Choose Xlendi for

  • a compact dramatic bay
  • cliffs
  • prettier short walks
  • sunset
  • a romantic waterfront dinner
  • swimming from rocks

Choose Marsalforn for

  • a larger resort area
  • longer waterfront
  • more accommodation
  • access toward the Xwejni salt pans
  • a busier seaside-town feel

If we had only one day on Gozo, Xlendi is easier to work into a classic sightseeing circuit.

Xlendi vs Dwejra

If you are short on time, this is the harder comparison.

Dwejra gives you

  • dramatic geology
  • Inland Sea
  • Blue Hole
  • Fungus Rock
  • huge coastal scenery

Xlendi gives you

  • swimming
  • restaurants
  • an inhabited waterfront
  • easy coastal walking
  • sunset dinner

For a first Gozo trip, Dwejra is the more extraordinary natural sight. But Xlendi is the better place to relax. Fortunately, the two combine well.

Xlendi or Victoria?

They are complementary stops, not competing ones.

Victoria gives you:

  • Citadel
  • history
  • churches
  • architecture
  • museums

Xlendi gives you:

  • sea
  • swimming
  • cliffs
  • lunch
  • sunset

A particularly good first-time combination is Victoria in the morning → Xlendi at lunch → Dwejra in the afternoon. Our Victoria guide covers the morning half of that day, and if the Citadel is on your list too, Ġgantija Temples makes a good history stop on the way across the island.

How long should you spend in Xlendi?

Your goalTime needed
Quick photo stop30 min
Waterfront + viewpoint45–60 min
Bay + short cliff walk60–90 min
Swim1½–2 hrs
Lunch + sightseeing2 hrs
Lunch + swim2½–3 hrs

For most people on a one-day Gozo tour, budget about 60–90 minutes. If you like swimming, turn that into two hours.

How to get to Xlendi from Victoria

Xlendi is very close to Victoria and is easy to reach without a car. Malta Public Transport operates buses between Victoria and Xlendi, including routes 306 and 330, and the ride is a short one. Routes are occasionally diverted, so check the live timetable for your date, as the operator’s own page for route 330 carried a detour notice when we checked.

This proximity is one reason Victoria and Xlendi work so well together.

By bus

Start from Victoria Bus Terminal. Check the current timetable before leaving, because routes and frequencies can change.

By taxi

A taxi is particularly useful for:

  • families
  • four-person groups
  • short day trips
  • anyone linking Xlendi with Dwejra

The distance is small enough that you avoid wasting much sightseeing time.

By car

Driving is easy in principle, although parking can be frustrating near the waterfront during busy summer periods. If you have a rental car, arriving earlier in the day generally makes things simpler.

Can you get directly from Mġarr ferry terminal to Xlendi?

Public transport journeys commonly work most simply via Victoria, the central hub of Gozo’s bus network. Our Gozo ferry guide covers the crossing and the terminals.

For a time-limited day trip from Malta, this means that travelling Mġarr → Xlendi → Dwejra → Victoria → Mġarr entirely by public bus can involve more waiting and backtracking than the map initially suggests.

If you want to see five or six places in one day, a:

  • guided tour
  • private driver
  • taxi
  • rental car

is considerably easier. Tour stops are short, though. The 4x4 jeep tour with Comino and lunch (4.6/5 from more than 440 reviews) lists Xlendi Bay as a ten-minute visit, and the full-day Gozo coach tour with Ġgantija and lunch (4.3/5 from more than 2,900 reviews) walks you along the Xlendi promenade on a fixed timetable. Both give you the view and the atmosphere, but neither leaves time to swim, so if the water is the point, treat the tour as a preview and come back on your own.

Can you walk from Victoria to Xlendi?

Yes, and the distance is short enough for keen walkers. But there are two different ideas here.

Walking along ordinary roads

Possible, but not necessarily the best use of sightseeing time.

Hiking through the countryside

Much more interesting. The landscape around Xlendi and nearby Munxar includes valleys, fields and paths descending toward the coast. Visit Gozo describes the pastoral landscape running down toward Xlendi and promotes longer walking routes across this side of the island.

For a one-day trip, take the bus. For an overnight Gozo stay, walking becomes much more appealing.

The bigger Xlendi coastal walk

Walkers can use Xlendi as part of a much longer route through southern Gozo. Visit Gozo’s official Xlendi Walk crosses a substantial stretch of the island between Mġarr Harbour and Xlendi, passing landscapes around:

  • Xatt l-Aħmar
  • Mġarr ix-Xini
  • Ta’ Sannat
  • Ta’ Ċenċ
  • Munxar

before finishing at Xlendi Bay. That is a proper hiking day, not something to add casually to a sightseeing stop. If hiking is part of your trip, the cooler period is much more comfortable than peak summer, and Visit Gozo highlights outdoor activity during the milder months.

Best time of day to visit Xlendi

Morning

Best if you want:

  • quieter swimming
  • easier parking
  • less heat
  • clearer water before a busy summer afternoon

Lunchtime

Best if your main goal is Victoria → Xlendi waterfront lunch → continue sightseeing. This is probably the most practical timing on a one-day Gozo itinerary.

Late afternoon

Best overall for atmosphere. You can:

  • swim
  • walk the cliffs
  • have a drink
  • watch the light change

Sunset

Best for couples, photographers and overnight visitors. This is when we think Xlendi is at its strongest.

Best season to visit Xlendi

May and June

Possibly the best overall balance. You get:

  • warm weather
  • long daylight
  • greener landscapes than late summer
  • fewer peak-season crowds

Sea temperatures may still feel cool to some swimmers early in the period.

July and August

Best for guaranteed summer atmosphere. Also:

  • busiest
  • hottest
  • hardest for parking
  • most crowded around the tiny beach

If visiting then, prioritise morning or late afternoon.

September

One of our favourite months for Xlendi. The sea retains summer warmth while the most intense holiday rush begins to ease. Visit Gozo associates Xlendi’s local feast and traditional gostra events with the first Sunday of September.

October

Often still very attractive for walking, eating outside and potentially swimming, depending on conditions. Weather becomes less predictable as autumn progresses.

November to March

Xlendi becomes a completely different place. Come for:

  • scenery
  • coastal walks
  • lunch
  • storms and dramatic seas
  • quiet evenings

and don’t expect a guaranteed beach day. Gozo in November covers what the island is like once the summer crowds are gone.

What is the Xlendi Gostra?

The gostra is a traditional Maltese competition in which participants try to run along a sloping, greased pole extending over the water and capture a flag. Versions are held during festas in coastal communities.

Xlendi’s annual feast festivities include the gostra, adding one of Malta’s more unusual local traditions to what is usually a relaxed resort bay. If your dates happen to coincide with the event, expect the bay to feel considerably more festive, and more crowded, than usual.

Is Xlendi good for families?

Yes, with some qualifications. Families benefit from:

  • compact layout
  • easy access to food
  • relatively sheltered swimming
  • toilets and services nearby
  • short walks instead of long sightseeing distances

However:

  • the actual beach is small
  • rock entries can be slippery
  • deeper water begins beyond the inner bay
  • cliffs require normal supervision
  • summer waterfronts can be busy

For very young children whose priority is sandcastle-building, Ramla Bay may be easier. For families with older children who want to swim and snorkel, Xlendi is excellent.

Is Xlendi accessible?

The central waterfront is comparatively easy to explore because much of the activity is concentrated around the bay. However, some of the most scenic routes involve:

  • stairs
  • rocky surfaces
  • gradients
  • uneven coastal paths

The walk toward Caroline Cave and the more exposed cliff sections will therefore not suit every visitor. If mobility is limited, you can still enjoy waterfront → bay view → meal → short promenade without attempting the higher paths.

Is Xlendi worth visiting if you don’t swim?

Definitely. We would still come for:

  • lunch
  • photographs
  • the cliff setting
  • the waterfront walk
  • Xlendi Tower
  • sunset

In fact, during the cooler months swimming becomes secondary and Xlendi still works very well as a sightseeing stop.

Where are the best views in Xlendi?

From the cliff path toward Caroline Cave

Probably the easiest elevated perspective over the bay. You see the boats below and the buildings wrapped around the water.

Around Xlendi Tower

Better for wild coastline and sunset.

From the opposite edge of the inlet

Good for looking back toward the waterfront.

From the water

Kayaking, swimming or a boat trip gives you the most dramatic sense of how steeply the cliffs enclose the bay.

Best photography time

For photographs of the water, late morning to early afternoon can bring out turquoise tones when the sun is high. For photographs of the landscape, late afternoon is more flattering. For atmosphere, blue hour after sunset can be particularly attractive when the restaurant lights reflect on the water.

A perfect 90-minute Xlendi stop

If Xlendi is one part of a full Gozo day trip, we would structure it like this.

0:00 — Arrive at Xlendi

Walk straight to the waterfront instead of spending your limited time browsing inland streets.

0:10 — Walk along the bay

Follow the waterside route toward the cliff.

0:25 — Caroline Cave/viewpoint

Climb if conditions and mobility allow.

0:40 — Return to waterfront

Choose between a quick swim or drink.

0:50 — Swim / coffee / gelato

Thirty minutes is enough for a refreshing dip but not a full beach session.

1:20 — Dry off and depart

Continue toward Dwejra or Victoria.

That gives you a real taste of Xlendi without sacrificing half the day.

A half-day Xlendi plan

If you have more time:

11:00 — Arrive. Walk around the inner bay.

11:30 — Swim or snorkel. Spend an hour in the water.

12:30 — Lunch. Choose a waterfront table.

14:00 — Coastal walk. Continue toward Xlendi Tower.

15:00 — Coffee or gelato. Then return to Victoria or continue elsewhere.

For sunset, simply shift this plan into the afternoon and have dinner afterwards.

How to combine Xlendi with Victoria

This is one of the easiest pairings in Gozo.

Ideal sequence

Morning: Victoria + Cittadella

Lunch: Xlendi

Afternoon: Dwejra

Victoria is inland and historical. Xlendi gives you a break beside the sea. Dwejra then provides the dramatic natural finale. You get three very different sides of Gozo without travelling huge distances. The one-day Gozo itinerary shows how that loop fits around the ferry times.

How to combine Xlendi with Dwejra

This is arguably an even better pairing. At Dwejra, concentrate on:

  • Inland Sea
  • Blue Hole
  • Fungus Rock
  • coastline

Then come to Xlendi for:

  • swimming
  • dinner
  • sunset

If you are staying overnight on Gozo, this is one of the strongest late-afternoon and evening combinations on the island.

Should you stay overnight in Xlendi?

Xlendi is one of Gozo’s better bases if your ideal evening involves walking down to the sea for dinner instead of staying inland.

Stay here if you want

  • waterfront atmosphere
  • sunset
  • swimming outside your hotel or apartment
  • restaurants within walking distance
  • a compact resort village
  • easy access to Victoria

Consider somewhere else if you want

  • nightlife: Malta’s main island is stronger
  • a large sandy beach: the Ramla area is better
  • a completely rural atmosphere: choose a farmhouse inland
  • maximum public transport convenience: Victoria is the practical winner

For a two- or three-night Gozo stay, Xlendi offers a particularly good mix of holiday atmosphere + access to the rest of the island. How long you need in Gozo helps you decide whether an overnight stay is worth it.

What to bring to Xlendi

For a normal sightseeing and swimming stop:

  • swimsuit
  • towel
  • water shoes if you dislike rocky entries
  • snorkel mask
  • sunscreen
  • hat
  • water
  • shoes suitable for the cliff path
  • dry bag or waterproof phone pouch

If you plan to hike toward the tower or farther along the coast, don’t rely on sandals alone.

What you can skip

If you only have one day in Gozo, don’t feel obliged to:

  • spend hours sunbathing
  • walk the entire official Xlendi hiking route
  • visit every surrounding cave
  • turn the visit into a full diving or watersports session

Xlendi works beautifully as a short atmospheric stop. Save longer activities for an overnight visit.

Is Xlendi Bay overrated?

No, but expectations matter. You may be disappointed if you arrive expecting a huge undeveloped Mediterranean beach. That is not Xlendi. The waterfront is built up, the beach is tiny and restaurants occupy much of the bay front.

But if you expect a compact cliff-lined seaside village where you can swim in clear water and eat beside the bay, Xlendi delivers very well. Its strongest feature isn’t wilderness. It is how easily the landscape and village work together.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Xlendi?

Xlendi is on the southwestern side of Gozo, a short distance from Victoria.

Is Xlendi Bay worth visiting?

Yes. It is one of Gozo’s most enjoyable coastal stops, especially if you want to combine scenery, swimming, food and a short walk.

Is Xlendi a beach?

Yes, but the actual beach is very small. Much of the swimming access is from rocky areas and platforms around the bay.

Can you swim in Xlendi?

Yes. Swimming and snorkelling are among Xlendi’s main attractions.

Is Xlendi good for snorkelling?

Yes, particularly around the rocky sides of the bay.

Is Xlendi better than Ramla Bay?

Neither is universally better. Choose Ramla for sand and a traditional beach day. Choose Xlendi for swimming, restaurants, cliffs and sunset.

How long should I spend in Xlendi?

Allow 60–90 minutes on a sightseeing day or 2–3 hours if swimming or having lunch.

Does Xlendi have restaurants?

Yes. Restaurants and cafés line much of the waterfront, and dining beside the bay is one of Xlendi’s main attractions.

Can you see sunset from Xlendi?

Yes. Xlendi is one of western Gozo’s popular sunset locations.

How do I get from Victoria to Xlendi?

Public buses connect Victoria and Xlendi; the current network includes routes 306 and 330. Check the live timetable, as routes are sometimes diverted.

Is Xlendi Tower worth visiting?

Yes if you enjoy walking or have more than an hour in Xlendi. The tower dates from 1650 and the walk gives you more open coastal scenery than the main waterfront.

Is Xlendi good for a Gozo day trip?

Very. Its proximity to Victoria and Dwejra makes it easy to include without a huge detour.

Can you spend an entire day in Xlendi?

Yes if you want a relaxed swimming, diving or seaside day. If sightseeing is your priority, however, we would use only part of the day here and explore more of Gozo.

The verdict

Xlendi is not the place we would choose for Gozo’s best beach. It may be the place we would choose for Gozo’s best all-round seaside stop.

Within a few minutes you can move from swimming → cliff path → coffee → snorkelling → seafood lunch → sunset without organising anything complicated.

For a first Gozo day trip, give it about 60–90 minutes, ideally around lunch or later in the afternoon. If you have time for a swim, make it two hours. And if you are staying on Gozo overnight, come back around sunset.

Xlendi is considerably more appealing when you no longer have a ferry timetable in the back of your mind. When you are ready to plan the day, compare every Gozo day trip or check availability for the jeep tour above.
